This is the follow up call I received after contacting the PA Department of Agriculture’s local appointed county Vet’s office regarding a local pet store in Hermitage, PA (Pet Supplies Plus) selling infant rabbits too young to be owned by unknowing pet owners. I went in one day and noticed an infant rabbit attempting to eat pellets out of a dish in a glass encasement. The rabbit was very frail, tiny, had crud in his eyes and snuffles (mucus in the nose). If snuffles gets bad enough, the bunny could die. I contacted a local rabbit rescue who told me to save the rabbit – worrying about refunds later, I did. When I did, the pet store staff brought out more infant rabbits from the back room. The rabbit rescue and I had to purchase these rabbits one by one just to save their lives. We were given no care instructions for the rabbits, not even commentary on them or what their dietary needs might be, or mentioning that they were showing signs of ill health. This pet store knew these baby rabbits were sick because when I, the customer, mentioned it, they said that they dumped antibiotics into the water for all the rabbits to drink. That can also be dangerous as healthy rabbits drinking the antibiotic water can build resistance to the antibiotics. This is a first hand witnessing of the tragic cycle of contributing to pet store animal abuse for profit. This is why they say to never buy an animal from a pet store because it allows them to continue doing this and you can’t save all …
